UK government is developing a “murder prediction” programme which it hopes can use personal data of those known to the authorities to identify the people most likely to become killers.
Researchers are alleged to be using algorithms to analyse the information of thousands of people, including victims of crime, as they try to identify those at greatest risk of committing serious violent offences.
The scheme was originally called the “homicide prediction project”, but its name has been changed to “sharing data to improve risk assessment”.
The Ministry of Justice hopes the project will help boost public safety but campaigners have called it “chilling and dystopian”.
Breaking news, government is creating the torture nexus, a device popularized by the popular novel “don’t build the torture nexus”, and it’s wildly successful film adaptation “please for the love of god do not build the torture nexus”
It has been re-branded as the “Hardened offender persuasion experience system or HOPES”
Reminder: Person of Interest (fantastic series for those that haven’t seen it) is a fictionalized version of an actual system that the NSA developed in the 90s/early 2000s, which a journalist highlighted with the help of a whistleblower in 2006:
Various things that Snowden showed us in more detail, and that are still in use at NSA are based on ThinThread and Trailblazer.
You joke, but the UK ministry of defense satellite communication system is actually called Skynet, has been since they first started it in the 1960’s
The US airforce is building some kind of distributed air combat system they call “skyborg” .
The big, glaring hole is what they plan to do with those findings once they’re done with the “research” phase.
Governments around the world are already using research backed tools to assess the risk of people in community bashing their wives and raping people. It’s just not something that public hears about much.
The problem is that nothing in life is 100% accurate. We use weather reports all the time even though they can sometimes be wrong.
Don’t worry it’ll be 100% accurate even if it isn’t.
Already exists.
Hmm wait a minute this code just asks for a hhex colour code for the suspects skin…
You wrote the minority report?
Pre crime. The UK is really hitting it out of the park these days.
Utilising intelligence and statistics to know where to target resources is hardly ‘pre crime’. In fact it’s it’s pretty standard.
No one is going to be arrested and prosecuted for simply being marked as ‘more likely’ to commit a crime.
Is this before or after they create the Space Police?
Idiocracy in America and Minority Report in UK
The game is simple:
If we have the tech to predict crime, it can only be counted as ‘working’ if it can predict the crimes of the ruling class also. Anything else always is and will always only be a tool of oppression BY the ruling class.
How about a tool to predict wage theft, bribery, tax evasion, money laundering, and release of toxic industrial pollutants.
You don’t really need a tool for that though, you can just kind of gesture in any direction and there it is!
Breaking news prediction tool to be shutdown as it keeps predicting members of parliament will kill spouses, secret girlfriends and prostitutes despite them swearing they would never do such things
All the erroneous (* inconvenient) predictions will be filtered out long before any human sees them.
Here’s my future.
knock knock, “High can I help you”
Future Crime Squad “On the floor mothefucker, hands behind your back, stop resisting or I’ll motherfucking kill you. I’m arresting you for the future murder of your mother-in-law”
“You see the dilemma don’t you. If you don’t kill me, precogs were wrong and precrime is over. If you do kill me, you go away, but it proves the system works.”
Tom hallucinated the climax of the movie. He never escaped prison
I would wager quite a lot of money this “tool” is a really just a sloppily made linear regression model built in Excel
Now you reminded me of the time the government messed up because someone was using an outdated excel file version that couldn’t handle the data that as being inputted.
Everyone knows the UK government used pre 2007 excel to monitor the Covid numbers.
“Microsoft Excel increased its worksheet row limit to 1,048,576 rows with the release of Excel 2007, which became available to the public in January 2007. This expansion, known as the “Big Grid,” significantly increased the previous limit of 65,536 rows, accommodating the growing need for handling larger datasets.”
The fact it could not handle numbers above 65K fucked up the Covid stats and was a national embarrassment.
