Three data points that help pinpoint it:
- We know her father died in the incident 12 years ago.
- We have a picture of Hu Tao, her father, and her grandfather. Hu Tao appears to be ~5 years old. And since her father is still alive in the picture, it’s from at least 12 years ago (and possibly older),
- Hu Tao doesn’t remember what her father looks like. So she couldn’t have been much older than 8 when he died.
Ballpark oldest possible age: ~20 (~8 + 12 = 20)
Ballpark youngest possible age: 17 (picture is from shortly before her dad died, 12+5 = 17)
Note: that should make her an adult in her culture no matter where in the range she falls, since adulthood appears to start around age 16.
That’s all make sense now.
